"Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order directive temporarily suspending certain requirements of the plastic bag ban has now expired.

Consequently, California retailers subject to the requirements of California’s single-use carryout bag ban (SB 270 Padilla, Chapter 850, Statutes of 2014) are barred from offering single-use carryout bags to customers. Instead, these stores may provide a reusable grocery bag or recycled paper bag to a customer at a charge of at least 10 cents. See SB 270 frequently asked questions here. Additionally, reusable bags provided by customers continue to be allowed. CalOSHA published health and safety guidance for grocery stores in handling reusable bags, focused on protecting both grocery workers and customers.

The safety and environment of Californians remains a top priority for the state. CalRecycle defers to federal and state health and safety guidance on matters outside of the department’s regulatory purview.
